Workplace Essential Skills For Success (WESS)

Workplace Essential Skills For Success (WESS) training is designed for adults who are underemployed or seeking employment and who need additional support to strengthen their Essential Skills for Success.

Learning activities focus on the specific tasks associated with either an individual’s education goal, current job or desired occupation. Training is customized to meet the learning goal and work environment of each learner.

Additionally, WESS training can be designed to support individuals who have experienced difficulties with taking certification exams. Training is adapted to help individuals prepare for Canadian high school equivalency tests – CAEC, Red Seal Trades Challengers, or any certification or exam that does not have supported learning attached to it, for example, industry safety training, Real Estate Salesperson License, Canadian Forces Aptitude Test (CFAT), etc. Training helps participants develop learning, studying, test taking, and other life skills. It does not provide instruction in industry-specific technical skills.

Training is delivered through a blended model structured around each participant’s learning needs. Delivery may include classroom, small-group, one-on-one, or online learning. Currently, WESS is offered in Charlottetown, Summerside, and Montague and there is no cost to participants. The in-person learning schedule differs each year based on the needs of the learners.

Here’s what previous learners are saying about WESS:

This is my second attempt at getting my grade 12 [equivalency]. My first try, I had no support and gave up. With the support I received this time, I was able to complete the science portion and am now almost ready for the math. This program helped me to build my confidence to follow through and keep working.

The learning environment at WESS was a game changer for me, especially as someone who really struggled in high school. The coaching versus teaching made it easier for me to get what I needed done, and do it in my own learning style.

The environment and staff were so encouraging and motivated me to keep trying when I wanted to give up on school. Thank you to everyone at WESS for giving me the opportunity to get my high school equivalent in a safe and welcoming space and getting the ball rolling.

I found the WESS program to be a great experience. The structure and flexibility as well as great staff made it enjoyable to be there. There was no shortage of one-on-one interaction if you needed help. The amount of material that was provided was like getting the smart kids’ notes. You develop a sense of accomplishment when you finally understand something you’re working on. I think it’s something you can use as a motivator for future endeavors. I wish that I would have done this program decades ago.

This program was the best. I hated high school growing up, but the way it taught and that it’s [about] my goals, it was really easy to [attend] and want to go. I think this is a really amazing program and I probably wouldn’t have gotten my CAEC without this program.

Because of the WESS program, I’m able to get a better, stable job and start my future. I’m able to go to college now if I want. This program has opened the door for me in so many ways and I’m very grateful for it.

I can honestly say this program is helping. When I couldn’t get back to school I was afraid that I’d not be able to get back the knowledge I was learning and never get a well paying job but being here has given me hope and I feel I can get somewhere in life, leave my mark even if I only affect the people in my life.

At Workplace Learning PEI, we acknowledge that the work we do, the learning we support, and the lives we build together take place on Epekwitk, part of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. The Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq have lived on and cared for this Island for more than 12,000 years. We honour the Peace and Friendship Treaties made with the Mi’kmaq. These Treaties remain living agreements and remind us that we are all Treaty People, with responsibilities to the relationships we share. As an organization committed to learning and growth, we recognize that reconciliation requires listening respectfully, building meaningful relationships, challenging what we think we know, and carrying that learning into how we work and live together on Epekwitk.
